Early for Us

Mya has been loving all the decorated houses. So, I broke down and got out the manger, star and light strings and put up our decorations.

Some may think they are a bit odd but we switched from a tree to a manger about 15 yrs ago. Keith made the manger for the church Christmas play and we started decorating our home around it. It's easy and clean. As Christmas approaches, packages will appear around the manger and the whole floor near it will be full of colorful wrapped boxes.

In the photo, Mya is calling Carrie to tell her that we have put up the decorations.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hope everyone is having a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are having a quiet day. Erin is being an honorary Dukich for the day--Molly is taking her along to their family functions. Carrie is home relaxing. Saturday she is getting her dress fitted. Otherwise, she would be in Colorodo with Jon, visiting his sister, Mary. She is giving Mya a bath--they are having fun. Keith did church bills and I am ready to go to work--side by side with Doctors, saving lives ;). I always joke about that but there is a bit of truth in there. Someone has to work on holidays and it's my turn. Joe is visiting some of Rachael's family, today. That's our day in a nutshell, the highlight being seeing the new Dora balloon on the Macy's parade.

Standoff in the OK family room

Well, I'm getting to the end of the proverbial rope. I have noticed many things with Mya that I will need to work on. Fortunately, we are scheduled for another counseling session next Wed.

Today, I had had enough of being bossed around. Yeah, I know I'm the mom but sometimes our eyes get clouded by those cute little faces. Anyway, Mya had a big hissy fit and it took about 15 minutes but she did what I told her to do. I suspect this area will get better if I can stick to my guns.

Anyway, I just wanted to blog this so I have record. Mya has this funny/quirky little habit of putting things back where they were if I move them and she doesn't want me to. I.e. If she wants her whatever-it-is and I can reach it, I grab it and she gets mad, puts it back in the exact spot it was and then gets it herself. On the flip side, if she wants me to get something and I am busy and want her to get it herself, she will literally pull me away from what I am doing and make me pick it up. That is what happened today. I refused to get the pink and Murphy so that we could rock in the chair. Silly, but quite a power struggle. She ran and fell on the floor crying. It actually would look quite funny on a video. At one point, she nearly fell on the fireplace bricks. That would not have been a pretty site. After the big stand off, she sat in my lap and watched TV but she would not let me put my hands around her.

All this is daily behavior at our house. That is why we went to the counselor.

Bang Trim

I forgot to mention in yesterday's post that Mya had her little safety scissors out again. I came down to the family room and there on the floor were a few swatches of hair--right from the front, of course. I was going to just leave it alone but broke down and cut her bangs short to bring them closer to the same length. So much for Christmas pix. Hopefully they will be quite a bit longer by the big wedding.

Feeling a little Better

Getting a little silly tonight. Hope this
is the end of the
HFMD. Never want
to have it happen
in our house again.

Turkey Dinner

Even though the large group originally intended to eat the turkey had to be uninvited (due to Mya's HFMD), we had to bake that turkey. Carrie & Jon made the trek down from Superior and Joe & Rachael came up from New Brighton.

We took it easy and didn't even put the turkey into the oven until 9 am. Usually, I'm up before 6 stuffing the turkey and getting it into the oven. It was nice to just take our time.

Carrie had lost her glasses and by some timing fluke, Erin broke hers on Fri eve. So, since the Eye Clinic was open, we went down and ordered glasses for both of them. Thankfully, they both have easy perscriptions and can get by with fairly inexpensive glasses.

Mya was still pretty miserable yesterday. We took her to urgent care (UC) on Fri eve to make sure there was not something else happening but no, it was just this crumby HFMD raging war on her mouth. I am thankful she did not get the sores on her hands and feet. That would have been terrible. As it was, she has been fighting taking medicine, refusing to drink, and screaming in pain. The UC doc perscribed "magic mouthwash". It's got lidicaine in it. We squirt it into her cheeks and on her tongue and it numbs the sores for a while. We have also been giving her benedryl to help her sleep. She slept a good 9 hours last night. Without it, she wakes up every two hours or so, moaning. Fortunately today, Mya woke up fairly happy and asked for icecream for breakfast. She says, "Jesus make mouth feel better". Thank God!

Back to turkey dinner. We had a surprise this year. It appears our son, Joe, has decided that being a vegetarian isn't all it's cracked up to be. He hasn't eaten meat for 6 years. I can't believe it's been that long. To our amazement, he said he was going to eat the turkey. Seems he has started eating fish and poultry. He told us meat tasted weird after all that time. Rachael is maintaining her vegetarian ways. That's OK. Once you are used to having a vegetarian around, it's no big deal. They were never picky about eating everything but the meat. I just make sure
there are some non-meat protein options, mainly cheese.

It was a very nice day. No pressure. That's the way I like it.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Job Therapy

Well, Mya's happiness with the balloon only lasted a short time. She fell asleep on the sofa for a couple hours and then woke up in a miserable mood and pain. I don't think I can handle having all the rellies over tomorrow. So, now we are cancelling turkey dinner. Anyway, I will be leaving for job therapy in a few minutes. You know, the days you have a job to go to cuz it's a break. ;)

Birthday Celebrations & Mya Feeling Better

The ladies from work honored me with a birthday celebration last evening. The theme was Mexican cuz I love Mexican food. Robin did a great job decorating with streamers on the doors, a red table cloth, mexican confetti, a huge "fiesta" ballon and burro pinata. It was fun and delicious. Thanks to Beans (Robin) for coordinating the festivities.

As predicted, Mya is busy playing with the big balloon today. She loves the pinata too but I don't want to take a chance that she will fall on it and break it OR WORSE, take a scissor to it ;). It's good to see her active today. She's still drooling from the sores but has drank quite a bit of milk and juice. She is returning to her bossy self--via pointing. She doesn't seem to want to talk too much yet but I'm sure that will return.

BAD STUFF!

Yesterday was a really bad day. Keith and I thought that Mya had gotten hit in the mouth by a swing. She had a sore inside her lip but by 1 pm yesterday, I knew it was something worse than that. Nothing helped. She wouldn't/couldn't eat and had difficulty drinking. I took her to the pediatrician and she has hand, foot and mouth disease--sores all over her mouth. Poor thing. We got some tylenol with codeine. Short term relief. I finally gave her some Benedryl at 10:30 pm so that she could calm down and sleep. Also, it was time for some more tylenol/codeine. She slept til nearly 7 am. Thank God. She seems a bit better today but the doc said not to take her to daycare cuz it will peak today. YUCK. I hope none of the rest of us get it. Not as bad for adults/adolescents and the chances are not too high if we keep washing our hands.

The Bride & Mya

Carrie and Mya in Carrie's bedroom, just before going off to college.
Will try to get more pictures of the two of them over Thanksgiving.

Clean Up, Clean Up

Hey, Mya thinks cleaning up the paper is as fun as cutting it up.
Boy am I lucky!

When The Answer Is "NO"

So many times, when our children ask for something, we are forced to say "no" because it is best for them not to have what they want. Their reaction, especially the littler ones, is to stomp their feet and pout and as they get older, they ask "why?" Adults are no different. This last week, we asked God for a little boy to add to our family. He was a special need boy and would have fit well with us but God said "no". The Lord knows the desires of our heart. He also knows what is best for us. I am really disappointed and sad that we will not be this little boy's parents. I want to cry 'cuz it hurts. I'd like to ask "why" but I think I know the answer. When we get our next child, it will all be clear but for now, it just hurts. I know he was matched with a wonderful family that will take really good care of him. For that I am thankful but the head is often faster to understand than the heart.

More Swing Fun

Mild November Day

We woke up to a dusting of snow but now it is just a memory. Mya and I needed some fresh air. So we walked down to get the mail, only to remember that the gov't is celebrating Veteran's day today. Then, since we hadn't brought the garbage cans up, I put Mya in the huge recycling (clean) can and wheeled her up the driveway. She thought it was great. We swang for a bit, walked in the back yard, played "balance beam" on some boards, walked through the woods and then back to the swing. Here are some shots for all to enjoy.

Scissors Maniac

If you thought yesterday's pictures were funny, I wish I could have shown all the things that were in the wrath of that scissors today. So far, Mya has given the dog a few snip along with the dog's bandana that she received at the groomers yesterday. The cat has one side of whiskers that are shorter than the other and I put him in the closet for safety sake. Nearly all the floors are speckled with scraps of all sorts of paper. The good news is today she is using a children's scissors. I could take it away but she is keeping so busy and entertaining herself. I just have to vacuum a bit more often this way.

Busy Girl

Ok, before you call child protection, let me tell you that Mya was right behind me cutting while I was writing an email to my managers at work. So, she was not in any danger of cutting herself or serious injury. As for counter climbing, that picture must have been take by dad cuz I just found it when I downloaded the cutting shot. Kids, ya gotta love 'em!!

Flu Shots

I got mine on Oct 31 at the shot clinic at work. Mya got hers today.
Don't need any more of those nasty bugs in our house!!

I found this Maxine cartoon and wanted to share it. I'm not a drinker
but thought it was cute anyway.

Happy Birthday to . . . ME!

What a nice day. No, the weather was not sunny and 65 but it was a quiet day with Erin home from school. The best part is that the latest special needs list from Bethany came out. We have looked at the last couple lists but have never actually applied to be considered as parents for any of the children. This may be the one that we actually take action. Please help us pray as we consider the best route to take. God bless!

Church Bridal Shower

Saturday was Carrie's church bridal shower. There were lots of people there. Carrie is well liked, if you hadn't guessed. There were guys there too! Besides Jon, Keith, Dan (Jon's dad), Chris (bestman) and Joe (our son) all came. It was a nice to have all those people there and they were so generous. The food was great too. Thanks, church ladies.

Reflecting & Projecting

Seems like a lifetime ago--walking the Great Wall just before getting Mya. With a new batch of referrals coming out yesterday, we are chomping at the bit to go get Lily. BUT, that won't happen for over a year, unless the Lord sees fit to get things moving over in China.
Pray for our little Lily--health (mental and physical), safety, protection & a perfect match for our family. We love her already and we haven't even met.

Lazy Day

Mya and I are taking a quiet day to relax. No work, no daycare. Maybe a trip to the store to get a gift for Carrie's shower on Saturday. Not saying what because Carrie checks this blog sometimes. Guess I should do that this morning before we, yes both of us, take naps today. A couple nights working til 11 pm and getting up at 6:30, entitles me to a nap.
