Hot April Sunday

What do you do on a hot day? Take a walk, smell the flowers and finish off with a motorcycle ride, of course!

End of An Era

3/11/95 to 4/28/07
This morning Keith let Snowy out to do her business and she just didn't return. Apparently he found some throwup spots, which is unusual. When she wasn't back in half an hour, he was suspicious. We found her laying in the woods just in the back of this picture. Her paws were wet. She had been out making her morning rounds and I think, her heart gave out. We buried her about 10 ft from where we found her. It is strange to think of her being gone. She was like a shadow to anyone who went outside.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Colleen and Colette!!

Today is my sisters' birthday. Yep, they are twins and proud of it. They have had tons of fun over the years fooling people. When I was little, it was my job to tell them apart for other people. Now that they are grown, they keep the south central portion of MN wondering.

Borrowed this picture from Colette's site.

Happy birthday Keeny and Ketty!

What's a Little Nausea?

Well, enough to keep me home from work today. I've been hanging in there but not getting much done.
Here's me while Mya is napping today.

The Good and the Bad

This week marks 5 years since Carrie had a brain tumor removed. Some of you may not have known that. We are so blessed to have our daughter be a survivor. It was benign but very scary. As you do know, she is now married and will get an associates degree this spring. Yee Haw.

Now the bad. Mom just got news last week that her sister, Lorraine, has Acute Leukemia. It sounds as though there is something in her brain, also. Lorraine is choosing not to have chemo treatments. It is a very difficult time. Please keep them all in your prayers.

Erin is doing pretty well on her Israel donations. At last report she needed less than $1000 to have the full amount. Thanks to all who have supported her. You can check her MySpace link but it's more of a chatty kind of thing than a blog. So, don't expect much in the way of updates. I will have to do that here.

That's the 11:00 news from MN.
Sleep well.

Wow! What a shock to be nominated for an award.

My blogging started with a push from Becky Bilby over at the Chloe Makes 6. I see she has already been nominated but I am re-nominating her for her excellent blogging and for encouraging all of us travelmates to get into blogging. Without Becky, we would not have near the bond that we do.

My second nomination is Nikki Doctor at Life with Lily Lin. She has such wonderful story telling technique that people have encouraged her to write a book. All in all, Nikki is a great mom and friend.

Third nomination--can we re-nominate our nominator?? Stef, over at Never Too Many, is also a great blogger and story teller. She has made me laugh with the antics of her kids. Thanks Stef.

My fourth nomination goes to Amanda at Chinese Starfish. I have never met nor expect to meet Amanda but she shares life on the other side of adoption. If you have never read her blog, you need to bookmark it and check it out often.

Fifth nomination: Mr Brian at All in a Day's Work -- this man shares the many laughs that come with working in a nursing home. We all need to look at the lighter side of life and Mr Brian exemplifies doing that.
There you have it. Check them out and enjoy. Let them know they have been nominated.

Waking up to Music

Keith sets the alarm to music so that it is less harsh than a blaring beep but I don't usually get to hear the alarm. Mya is yelling mommy from her room and I jump out of bed to take her down stairs for juice and public TV (Sesame Street today). Today was no exception. The sun is shining and Snowy asks for out to do her usual business. When I opened the patio door, I got an orchestra of birds. I picked up Mya and stepped out to see them. Up in the top of one of the trees was a robin, singing his little heart out. From a distance, I could hear the familiar sound of pheasant wings followed by his call. Sometimes cardinals can be heard. I can't even identify all the bird songs but they are beautiful. Later in the day, it will switch to the frog orchestra and we will be nearly deafened by the songs of the frogs in the swamp.

Templates Galore

Well, I haven't worked at the hospital since last Friday and I return today to work all weekend. I've used my time to put together templates. Mya has been busy playing outside and insisting that we get out there and enjoy. Without her, I would be glued to this computer. Tried to catch this sunset out the dining room window. It's a bit dark but still beautiful.

The Arrival Home

Donna has shared their arrival home and so, I thought I would do so too, since today is the anniversary of Mya's arrival in America.
! ! ! ! !
As most of you know, our trip to China was spotted with strange happenings. I can think of it as a kind of comedy of errors, now that it has been 2 yrs. Remember that Carrie didn't have a ticket for the flight from Beijing to Changsha?? Yes, I was nearly hysterical. Well, our arrival home was kind of along those lines. Our son, bless his heart, was staying at our house and watching the animals. He was our planned ride home. So, when we arrived in MSP, we looked for him to meet and greet us. You guessed it, he was not there. It was raining and we were exhausted. Keith called home and found out that Joe thought we were coming home on Sunday. OOPS! So we grabbed a cab and went to Joe's apartment where his girlfriend, Rachael, met us with our Explorer. When we put Mya in the carseat, she screamed bloody murder for about 5 miles and then fell asleep from exhaustion.

Oh well, that's the way life goes sometimes. Joe met his new sister on Sunday afternoon and no one is the worse for wear. Mya adores both Joe and Rachael and all is well.

Command Central

Thank you to Stefanie Beckering for tagging me to post my blogging area. I took a couple minutes to tidy it up and took some pictures to share with you all. I'm sure that some of my "customers" and now new friends will enjoy seeing where their new blog templates were formatted. This is the back area of our family room. From my desk, I can look out our patio door and enjoy viewing the weather, a pheasant or squirrel or neighbor's cat run across the yard. I can also turn around to see what Mya is doing. Directly behind me are the bathroom and laundry room. Hence, the name command central. The only bad thing is I have to go up a set of stairs to the kitchen--well, maybe that is a good thing.

Here's a view of my actual computer and Mya coming over to ask a question. Notice the PJs. We often do not get dressed until late in the morning. I work evenings at a local hospital. So, all that can wait until a few hours at the computer are in for the day.

Signs of Growing Up

Mya is getting so big. I'm sure all the girls from our travel group have kind of passed the baby stage and are now on to the little girl stage. Some of the signs are that, soon we will be able to shop in the girls section at Kohl's and Target, looking into purchasing a booster type carseat and wearing real underpants.

Today, we had another big girl event. Mya sometimes has bloody noses at night and wakes to blood stains on her cheeks and sleeves (kleenex). This morning, Mya's "pink" (the very thin stringy kitchen towel that is her security blankie of sorts) fell victim to the blood stains. Also, Murphy, the infamous stuffed puppy, was just plain filthy. So, as I was filling the wash machine to wash some stuff, I asked Mya is "pink" should be washed. To my amazement, she ran and got it and put it in the washer. I also asked if Murphy should take a bath and she put him in too. Then she stood on her little kids chair and watched them circulate and bubble to see if they would come to the top. When it was time to put them in the dryer, no big deal and when nap time approached, it was time to take them out. OOOOO . . . warm pink and Murphy. Nothing could have beat that moment.
These are old photos, as you can tell. The top one is from when we drove Carrie to Spearfish SD to settle in to her first yr of college. The bottom one is from CNY 2006. Both shots include a pink towel. It is a BIG thing for Mya not to "need" her pink, even for a short time. She also forgot both pink and Murphy at daycare on Monday and survived until Wed morning without them and with minimal fuss. Amazing!
Some day, I may put that "pink" into a bag and store it away OR if it lasts long enough, Mya will take it along to college. Now THAT will be a big girl event!

Shortly after we were home from China, my coworkers gave Mya a wonderful shower. There were many wonderful outfits and blankets but the thing Mya latched on to was a dog named "Murphy". He goes everywhere with us even to this day. So, in his honor, the first "gotcha" pics taken this year included him. Both dog and girl have changed a bit in 2 years. We love ya Mya.

Happy Gotcha Day to all our travel buddies. Can't wait to see you in July!

Gotcha Anniversary

Tomorrow marks 2 yrs to the day that we met Mya in person. Actually since China 13 hours ahead of us, I guess it really is this evening, MN time. The top picture is me holding Mya in the bus after we received her. We mostly took video in the building. The bottom is her finding ad, which was posted in the local paper to see if Mya's bio parents would return for her. Since they did not, she became eligable for adoption. All of this adds up to the story we tell Mya. Almost every day and sometimes more, she wants to hear her story. It always ends with her living with her forever family in Minnesota.

Totally Unreal--2 yrs ago

I remember being overwhelmed by the whole trip to China. Beijing was just the most polluted city I had ever seen and never having traveled off the continent, I had SEVERE jet lag. But all in all, it was just a totally unbelievable experience to go to China. I kept thinking "are we really here?" In your head, you always knew that China was on the other side of this huge planet but to be standing there was just beyond my comprehension. I also remember noticing that I was suddenly in the minority--one of only a few caucasian folks. All in all, it was a terrific experience. My own feelings allowed me to understand what Mya must have been feeling when she was suddenly handed over to us--overwhelmed and out of sorts.

Photo Shoot

Mya and I headed off to Ritz Camera/Photo Studio this morning for some official portraits. Mya had a lot of fun this year. She really understood the concept and posed nicely. Look for your copy in the mail soon.
